CSGT – RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces / MSMWHS217 Gas Test Atmospheres

Introduction:

RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to enter and work in confined spaces in the resources and infrastructure industries.

MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres
This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work.

Target Audience:

RIIWHS202E - It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.

MSMWHS217 - It applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation. This unit of competency applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team or group and working in liaison with other shift team members and the control room operator, as appropriate.

Learning Outcomes:

  • RIIWHS202E
  • 1. Plan and prepare for working in confined space
  • 2. Work in confined space
  • 3. Exit confined space
  • 4. Clean up
  • MSMWHS217
  • 1. Prepare for gas testing
  • 2. Test gas
  • 3. Maintain equipment

Learning Methods:

  • Face to face classroom
  • Knowledge assessment
  • Practical assessment
  • No pre-course reading or homework is required

Program Benefits:

  • RIIWHS202E
  • Confined spaces can look harmless from the outside, but conditions inside can change quickly.
  • This program develops the practical awareness and skills needed to approach confined space work methodically, recognise hazards and make informed decisions before entry and while work is underway.
  • See What Others Might Miss: Learn to recognise the hazards associated with confined spaces, including hazardous atmospheres, oxygen deficiency, engulfment and other conditions that may affect safe entry and work.
  • Know What the Atmosphere Is Telling You: Develop practical skills using gas detection equipment to test and monitor atmospheric conditions before entry and while work is underway.
  • Use the Right Equipment, the Right Way: Build familiarity with equipment commonly associated with confined space work, including communication, access, ventilation and personal protective equipment.
  • Work Safely Before Entry and While Inside: Understand the importance of effective standby arrangements, clear communication and maintaining continuous monitoring between the standby person and workers inside the confined space.
  • Respond When Conditions Change: Learn to recognise when conditions are no longer acceptable and follow workplace procedures for withdrawing from the space safely.
  • Build Practical Industry Capability: Develop competencies applicable to confined space and atmospheric testing activities across industries including mining, resources, utilities, maintenance and construction.
  • MSMWHS217
  • You cannot always see, smell or sense a hazardous atmosphere. Gas testing provides the information needed to understand what is happening in the air around you and make informed decisions before work begins and while conditions are being monitored.
  • Know What You Are Walking Into: Learn how to test a working atmosphere for oxygen levels, flammable gases and potentially hazardous contaminants before work proceeds.
  • Turn a Reading Into a Decision: Develop the skills to interpret gas detector readings, compare results against required limits and determine the appropriate response.
  • Use Gas Detection Equipment with Purpose: Build practical skills in preparing, checking and operating electronic atmospheric testing equipment correctly for the task.
  • Understand Where Hazards Can Hide: Develop an understanding of atmospheric hazards, how contaminants may behave within a work area and why testing location and technique matter.
  • Recognise When Conditions Change: Learn to monitor atmospheric conditions and respond appropriately when readings indicate that the work environment is no longer within acceptable limits.
  • Communicate What the Atmosphere Is Telling You: Record and communicate test results clearly so that workers and supervisors can make informed decisions about whether work can proceed safely.
  • Build Practical Industry Capability: Develop atmospheric testing skills relevant to mining, resources, utilities, maintenance, construction and other workplaces where hazardous atmospheres may be encountered.
