CSGT – RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces / MSMWHS217 Gas Test Atmospheres

Introduction:

RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to enter and work in confined spaces in the resources and infrastructure industries.

MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres
This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work.

Target Audience:

RIIWHS202E - It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.

MSMWHS217 - It applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation. This unit of competency applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team or group and working in liaison with other shift team members and the control room operator, as appropriate.

Learning Outcomes:

  • RIIWHS202E
  • 1. Plan and prepare for working in confined space
  • 2. Work in confined space
  • 3. Exit confined space
  • 4. Clean up
  • MSMWHS217
  • 1. Prepare for gas testing
  • 2. Test gas
  • 3. Maintain equipment

Learning Methods:

  • Face to face classroom
  • Knowledge assessment
  • Practical assessment
  • No pre-course reading or homework is required

Program Benefits:

  • RIIWHS202E
  • Spotting hidden hazards: You learn to identify lethal threats like toxic gases, oxygen loss, and engulfment risks before entering a space.
  • Mastering life-saving gear: The course gives you practical skills to operate gas detectors, safety harnesses, and ventilation equipment correctly.
  • Managing emergencies: You learn how to maintain vital contact with outside standby personnel and execute fast, calm evacuation procedures.
  • Unlocking industrial jobs: This mandatory ticket satisfies Australian safety laws, instantly qualifying you for high-paying roles in mining, utilities, and construction.
  • MSMWHS217
  • Spot Invisible Dangers: Learn to identify immediate risks like toxic fumes, low oxygen, cave-ins, or sudden flooding.
  • Test Air Safely: Gain hands-on skill using electronic detectors to test the atmosphere before you step inside.
  • Understand Gas Behavior: Learn how heavy and light gases separate into layers so you do not miss hidden pockets of bad air.
  • Monitor Live Changes: Track air quality continuously from the outside to ensure the space remains safe while you work.
